April Round-Up
To be honest, not the best month emotionally. A lot of days in which my motivation was non-existent and it's a feeling I'm (thankfully?) not very used to. I've been trying to not force myself into trying to feel better when I simply don't and let me tell you, that's a first for me. I am ocasionally my own toxic positivity dictator and I've been trying to change that. Sometimes we simply feel like crap and that's ok?!
This is a shorter round-up focusing on what made me happy this month: books, movies and tv.
Highlight of the month
- Visited my hometown at the beginning of the month. It was great to spend time with my family, to meet up with friends and to go to places there I enjoy (all of them food-related). I do miss being around everyone but I absolutely don't regret moving to a city where I have more quality of life and fun things to do.
Books
- A Court of Thorn and Roses: This seems to be a love-or-hate-it type of series, and so far I'm on the fence. It's very easy to read and the world-building is interesting but I found all the characters pretty boring. Great Gowns, beautiful gowns it seems.
- Happening: Very short memoir by Annie Ernaux recalling her experience with abortion. It's frustrating to realize that the shitty experience with getting one is not a thing of the past and abortion is still a social taboo.
- Laziness does not Exist: This book has been on my to-read list for a while and it's significant that this was the month I decided to give it a try. I might write about it in a different post since it gave me a lot to think about.
- Also, brazilian comics! odiei by @t.s.carmo, ana, mosquinha e lagartixa by @paulomoreria and anésia by @will.tirando
Cinema
- Evidências do Amor: brazilian rom-com that brazilians around me refuse to believe is great!! Well it had it all: the romance, the comedy, and even the dramatic touch.
- Civil War: Pretty good movie about an extremely grim subject (war photography and journalism). Nice to see wagner moura getting international recognition.
- Challengers Safe to say a movie that will be on my mind for a long time. I just loved everything about it. And when I say EVERYTHING, I mean it.
- Streamed movies that were also very enjoyable (making my Mubi subscription worth the investment): The Last Train (1973), Perfect Days and Drive My Car
TV
There are few things that make me laugh as much as Taskmaster and I'm glad I got back into it this month. Everyone in Series 7 has their own level of insanity and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
